So I woke up at 4:45 am when my tv turned on. I was super excited because the heat and the internet went on as well. Unfortunately, the tv was replaying Apollo Anton Ohno coming in third in the only race he's medaled in so far. I don't think anyone but my roomates from binghamton would know this about me, but I freaking love the winter olympics and I have serious issues with nbc's coverage.
I didn't really go to bed, instead I reveled in modern convenience. I fired up my bitorrent client and read Kabuki by electic lamp light while the house warmed up from the 47 degrees it had dropped to.
When Sabrina got up, we were absolutely decadent. We turned the thermostat up to 72 and watched cable television and played electric nintendo while eating leftovers warmed up by a microwave machine. My parents still don't have power and therefore refuse to go home, so I had to go over and feed the cat. The vet says it fine.
Right now, I'm drinking beer cooled by a refrigerator while listening to Bonus Army tape I recovered from my folks' house. remember when we always used to say "Sensitivity?"
Life is great.

I think the biggest problem with the last two Olympics (winter and summer), is that they feel like they are taped. When I was a kid the Olympics always seemed like they were live, even though I'm sure they were taped. Like 1980 US V. Russia was tape delayed, but I'm sure it was awesome. I blame a few things for this.
First, the way NBC shows the events, I wanted to watch the Snowboard Cross the other night, but they don't just show the event, they switch back and forth between, Skeleton, Ice Skating, SBX, inspirational stories, and god knows what else for well over 3 hours. Any illusion of watching live events is quickly shatters, when you only get to watch them in 20 minute increments.
The bigger problem is probably the quicker access to results because of internet, global media, etc. I can't open Google News without accidentally seeing results, for events that will be on that night. The local sports station gives the results with no warning, as does even NPR (All Things Considered my ass, maybe you should consider I want to watch the events on tv, bitches). The thing that bugs me the most, the one outlet that you would think would want to control the release of results would be NBC. Yet they give out the results on the nightly news, right before primetime. Worst of is NBC's Olympic website. I was watching speed skating on Saturday, and I wanted to look up when the X-Country relay was going to be on, so I went to nbcolympics.com, and right there on the front page in a huge picture was the results of the event I was trying to watch right now. NBC's website has screwed me on two other events previously but showing the results earlier in the day, but I figured they wouldn't be stupid enough to show the results for something they are trying to get people to watch. Clearly, I was wrong.
I'm not sure what the solution to this is. At the very least NBC should have some divide in its website for people who want to watch the events. And showing the events like they were more live would also be a big help. Oh, well maybe CBS (or ABC) needs to get them back, NBC has come complacent.

We had power, but on the next block was the crazy blown-down tree through the house, which you would've seen on the news had you had cable. I took pictures but didn't get around to posting yet.
